What is the Gospel (good news)? PDF Print E-mail

The Gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ--that he came into world to save sinners.

The Gospel is 'good'

It's not news that's boring, burdensome or condemning.  It's good because it says that

  • God himself has secured our rescue in Jesus Christ
  • That forgiveness of sins is offered freely in Jesus' name
  • That Jesus is coming back to make all things new so that his people can live in fellowship with God forever.

The Gospel is 'news'

It's not advice.  Every other philosophy or religious system comes with advice about what you need to start doing or stop doing to know God and have deep personal peace.

The Gospel announces that Jesus was raised from the dead, which means he has paid the debt sinners have before God and accomplished his mission.

Our main problem

Our main problem in life is not that we dissappoint ourselves.  It's that we are sinners (criminals, rebels!) against a good and perfect God.  One name the Bible assigns to us is "sons of disobedience" and "children of wrath".  We die because of sin.  Every person is guilty before God and without excuse or defense (Romans 1 and 2).

The Gospel answers every problem we have; and foremost it answers our sin problem.

"For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly." Romans 5.

The rest of the Good News

Jesus rose from the dead, appeared to his disciples, ascended into heaven, sat down at the right hand of God, is coming in judgment to make all things right, and ushering in new heavens and new earth where the people of God--saved by his blood--will dwell with God in righteousness forever.

How to respond?

With empty hands, ask 'Jesus, will you save me too?'  Nothing you have done or will do will commend you to God.  But the blood Jesus shed on the cross is more than sufficient to make you right with God.  Today.

Ask Him:  "Jesus--I'm in, if you'll help me."

Hear His voice:

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
